Find Relief from your Herniated Disc Back Pain
Get Back Pain Relief
Your back health is important to your overall well-being. Although we try to avoid surgery whenever possible, sometimes it’s unavoidable. If less invasive options are no longer providing relief, there are several surgical procedures we may recommend, depending on the type and severity of your injury.
What is a herniated disc?
The bones that form the spine in the back are cushioned by discs. When one of those discs tears or leaks, it’s called a herniated disc (also commonly referred to as a bulged, slipped, or ruptured disc). While herniated discs are more common in the lower back, they can also occur in the neck.
Symptoms of a herniated disc include:
- Tingling or numbness in the shoulders, back, arms, hands, legs or feet
- Problems bending or straightening your back
- Muscle weakness
- Sharp or shooting pain that extends from the buttock down the back of one leg
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
We can help
With over 10,000 successful orthopedic spine procedures under our belt, we can treat your herniated disk using one of the following approaches:
Lumbar disc surgery
The most common surgery for treating sciatic-type pain caused by a herniated disc, this procedure is performed by making a small incision in your back. The recovery period ranges from four to six weeks, depending on the severity of your condition and symptoms.
Endoscopic disc surgery
This minimally invasive procedure uses an endoscope to remove portions of the disc without cutting muscle or bone to help preserve normal range of spine mobility.
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion
The most traditional way to treat cervical disc herniations, this procedure is performed through the throat, whereby the disc is removed and replaced by a bone plug or cage and then secured with a plate. Recovery generally averages three to six months.
Cervical disc replacement
This newer approach involves replacing the disc with a mobile bearing implant to restore motion of the neck. Recovery is generally two to three months with physical therapy.
Lumbar fusion
This life-enhancing procedure strengthens an unstable lumbar spine with metallic instrumentation, such as rods, screws, and cages.
Lumbar disc replacement
An alternative to fusion using newer motion-preserving technologies, the lumbar disc replacement helps patients with degenerative spine problems maintain motion long-term. Recovery averages around three months (sometimes more, sometimes less).
